An Old Wedding

For what are wedding bands for and why do we have them. I find this psudeo-relgious custom to be quite intresting. I find the whole cermony to be one huge almost waste of a time.

Now as a younger person I had the huge thing with lots of friends. If I were to be married again today . . . what would I do?

I first read in the book Glory Road by Hienline, this idea:

An ancient ceremonial said to constitute a military marriage. A sword being laid down on the ground, the parties to be married joined hands, when the corporal or sargent of company repeated these words:

Leap rogue, and jump whore, And then you are married for evermore.

Whereupon the happy couple jumped hand in hand over the sword, the drum beating a ruffle; and the parties were ever after considered as man and wife.

To me . . . I always like the simplicity.
